North Carolina House Republican Leader

How to Win in 2010

10-10NC GOP Chairman Tom Fetzer, Senate Republican Leader Phil Berger and I have worked tirelessly to recruit solid conservative candidates in all 50 Senate seats and 111 out of 120 House seats for the upcoming election in 2010. We have succeeded with one of the most impressive recruiting classes in history.

Since 1898, Democrats have held a majority in the Senate continuously and the House all but four years. Despite their rhetoric, Democrat ideas have been weighed, they have been measured and they have been found wanting.

2010 is an historic opportunity to regain the majority in the North Carolina General Assembly. For the State Senate it will be the first time in 112 years. During those same 112 years Republicans have had a majority in the State House for only 4 years. The results have been bad news for North Carolina.

Because redistricting occurs in 2011 (based on the 2010 census) this election for the Assembly is also crucial for winning congressional seats for the next decade.

Three things are needed to win an election – message, candidates and resources.

Message – Phil Berger, the Senate Republican Leader, and I have developed several dozen conservative initiatives over the last 3 years. In many cases we have been able to require Democrats to vote on them. We have those voting records on the amendments and the bills. A large majority of North Carolinians agree with us on most issues.

Candidates – Rep. Thom Tillis, the Chair of our House GOP Political Committee, and I have been traveling all over the state recruiting high quality principled conservatives who can win. The filing period closed February 26. 141 Republicans filed for 110 seats – an all time record. Twenty-nine Republican seats have no Democratic challenger. Only 9 Democratic seats are safe. We won the recruiting phase of the campaign.

Resources – Democrats always have more money to spend than Republicans. They specifically appeal to the special interests who are trying to get money from the government. We need to level the playing field. I know that we are in a recession. But the Democrats and their labor union allies are willing to make the sacrifices necessary to protect their entitlements. Will we make the sacrifices necessary to preserve our freedom?

Conservatives have the message and as of Februrary 28th we have the candidates. Now we need the resources.
