Governor Proposes Spending Increase

On April 20th Governor Bev Perdue presented her budget to the General Assembly. Let’s recap:
In 2009, after a widely advertised budget gap of $4.5 billion, “draconian cuts” and prolonged hand wringing — actual spending went up about 2% from $19.6 billion in 2008-2009 to an estimated $20 billion in 2009-2010 ($20.4 billion budget with about $400 million not spent).
In 2010 after claims of a billion dollar budget gap, “draconian cuts” — the Governor’s budget projects spending of about $20.7 billion which, with expected reversions, will come in at about $20.5 billion – a 2.5% increase in spending.
Which North Carolina businesses or families have increased actual spending each year in the middle of the worst recession in decades?
Note: For apples to apples comparison these figures include federal “stimulus” funds for each year. The Governor’s publically released budget total omits about $1.6 billion in stimulus funds which will be spent by the state.
